KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Freshman setter
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) became the third different player in Kutztown history to reach the 1,000 assist mark in a season as the Kutztown University women's volleyball team swept Cheyney University throughout two consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matches Friday evening at Keystone Arena.
Conti has now accumulated 1,024 assists on the season, ranking her sixth all-time at Kutztown. Austin Kinney and Katie Herman combined to produce the top five highest seasons. Conti will need 35 more assists in KU's final match to move into the top five by surpassing Kinney's 2006 season, in which she had 1,058 assists.
Kutztown (14-18, 8-13 PSAC) maintained control over Cheyney (5-27, 0-21 PSAC) in both matches, presenting the opportunity for some of the KU reserves to have big nights.
In the first match,
Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) saw her first action of the season and didn't disappoint, hitting above .500 and producing eight kills with only one error. Freshman
Zandria Zielinski (York, Pa./York Catholic) added seven kills and
Aly York (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) put down a career-high six kills.
Freshman
Tori Wakelee (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) shined in the second match, leading KU with a career-high eight kills, while also grabbing a career-high nine digs. Zielinski recorded another eight kills and freshman
Lauren Szkolnicki (Springfield, Pa./Country Day School of the Sacred Heart) added seven, a personal best.
Libero
Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) led KU in digs for both matches, coming up with 33 total on the night. Conti dished out 38 assists in the first match, and 25 in the second. Hodgson finished with four blocks in two matches.
Kutztown will conclude its season tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 16, on Senior Day as the Golden Bears take on West Chester University in its final match from Keystone Arena at 2 p.m. Hodgson,
Nicole Brumbley (Oxford, PA/Oxford), and
Emily Heppler (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown) will all be honored during the pregame festivities for their outstanding careers at Kutztown.
