Volleyball Falls to Division-Leading UPJ

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 defeat Saturday afternoon at Keystone Arena in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup against Eastern Division opponent University of Pitt-Johnstown.
 
Kutztown (8-9, 2-4 PSAC) cruised to 25-12 first-set victory against the division-leading Mountain Cats (10-4, 4-2). After an inefficient first set, UPJ straightened out its attack. Tied 8-8 in the second, Kelsey Shanabrook rallied off six quality serves to build a quick lead against Kutztown. The Lady Cats minimized errors and recorded 21 total blocks to win the final three sets and the match (25-18, 25-18, 25-20).
 
Freshman Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) had a career day, recording a pair of personal-high's with 19 digs and four service aces, while dishing out 36 assists.
 
Emily Kopinski (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) also notched four service aces and recorded 10 digs for the defense. Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) added 19 digs in the defeat.
 
Sophomore Audrey Stringer (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) led the Golden Bear attack with nine kills and only one error. KU received eight kills apiece from Liama Goodrich (Birdsboro, PA/Daniel Boone), Danielle Van Buren (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley), and Nicole Brumbley (Oxford, PA/Oxford).
 
Kutztown will return to action at Keystone Arena this Tuesday, Oct. 8 when it faces off against East Stroudsburg at 7 p.m.
