KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team put on the pressure in the second half against Bloomsburg University Wednesday afternoon, connecting on two quick goals to defeat the Huskies in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at Keystone Field.
Junior
Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) opened up the scoring for the Golden Bears (6-3, 6-3 PSAC) in the 58th minute. Costello brought down a long ball from defender
Katie Oliveri (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg), created some space at the top of the box, and then slotted the ball to the far post past the Bloomsburg (4-6, 2-6 PSAC) keeper with her left foot.
Just under 12 minutes later, Costello got past a defender in the box and ripped a shot on net. BU goalkeeper Danielle Fiorelli made a nice effort to push the ball aside. However, the ball landed at the leg of freshman
Megan Frailer (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright), who was in the right position to knock it in the open net.
Kutztown kept up the consistent offensive pressure late into the game, killing time by forcing the ball into the corners until the final buzzer.
After Wednesday's contest, Costello and Frailer each have three goals on the season, tying them with
Alaina Curry (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) for the team-lead.
KU outshot the Huskies 16-7 and received three corners to BU's two.
The defensive line was solid for the Maroon and Gold in Wednesday's contest. Goalkeeper
Alina Rakiewicz (Denver, PA/Cocalico) made three saves in net for Kutztown, recording her fourth shutout on the season.
Kutztown now finds itself on a five-game winning streak, its longest since 2011. This ties West Chester for the second-longest active winning streak in the PSAC, trailing only California (PA)'s current six-game winning streak.
KU will only have two days of rest before it heads to Lock Haven this Saturday, Oct. 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
