Golden Rams Oust Kutztown, 45-24

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown's Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) had 264 all-purpose yards, but West Chester got three rushing touchdowns from Rondell White and Mike Mattei passed for 318 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-24 win for the Golden Rams.
 
Wortham rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown and his 98-yard kickoff return touchdown to open the second half pulled KU to within 17-14.  Mattei, however, connected with Adam Dempsey for a 38-yard touchdown and Andrew Cohen returned a fumble for a touchdown to put West Chester ahead 31-17 after the third quarter.
 
Making his first career start in place of an injured Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington), Kutztown's Josh Luckenbaugh (York, Pa./Dallastown) a school record 36 of his 53 attempts for 306 yards, completing passes to 11 different receivers in the game.  He threw one touchdown, but was intercepted twice. He passed Morton's old single game record of 35 completions, set against the Golden Rams in 2010.
 
Kutztown has topped 300 yards passing as a team in all four games this season.
 
Shahaid Smith (Ridley, PA/Ridley) had his second straight 12 reception game, leading the team with 86 receiving yards.
 
The Golden Bears struck first taking a 7-0 lead after their first possession.  Luckenbaugh was a perfect 4-for-4 on the drive, with Wortham rushing for 51 yards on eight carries, including an 11-yard score midway through the first quarter.
 
Mattei found Jim Kelly late in the period for a 29-yard touchdown to finish an 11-play drive to tie the game at 7-7 entering the second quarter.
 
Shawn Leo booted a 48-yard field goal for West Chester and the Golden Rams turned a KU turnover into a touchdown run by White for a 17-7 lead at the intermission.
 
The second half opened with Wortham's kickoff return touchdown, the second longest in school history, to bring the Golden Bears within a single possession at 17-14.
 
West Chester went 79 yards in four plays later in the third period, with a 47-yard pass to Brundidge  setting up Dempsey's 38-yard score with 6:01 left in the quarter.
 
On KU's next possession, Luckenbaugh was sacked by Matt Carroll and Cohen recovered a fumble for a four-yard touchdown to put the Golden Rams up 31-14.
 
The Golden Bears answered with a 41-yard field goal by Jack Ruggieri (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) to trail 31-17 entering the fourth quarter.
 
White rushed for a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns before a 25-yard strike from Luckenbaugh to Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) made it 45-24.
 
Kelly caught five passes for 100 yards and a touchdown for West Chester.
 
Ronell Williams made a game-high 12 tackles for West Chester, including a sack and also intercepted a pass in the game.  Anthony McCloskey had 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack in the game.
 
For KU, Sam Dixon-Dougan had a team-best eight tackles.  Zach Greenwald (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) had 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
 
Kutztown hits the road next weekend with a road tilt at Slippery Rock on September 29 at 6:05 p.m.
