Box Score 2 CHEYNEY, Pa. – Kutztown University dropped a pair of 3-1 finals to Indiana (Pa.) and California (Pa.) on the first evening of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Crossover weekend, hosted by Cheyney.
In the IUP match, the Golden Bears (8-6) fell behind 2-0 (25-21, 25-18) before winning the third set 27-25. KU hung tough in set four, but the Crimson Hawks picked up the victory with a 25-22 final.
Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach (Fairleigh Dickinson)) led the team with 13 kills and three aces and posted a double-double with 20 digs.
Brianna Risch (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) picked up 10 kills and led the team with eight blocks, including two solos.
Emily Heppler (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown) led the team with 22 digs.
In addition to Risch, several other KU players had strong matches at the net.
Danielle Van Buren (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) and
Audrey Stringer (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) each had four blocks, while
Nicole Brumbley (Oxford, PA/Oxford) added three.
Megan Cerveny led a balanced attack for Indiana (Pa.) with a dozen kills, while Kelly Barnes had a match-high 29 digs.
Later in the day, Kutztown faced Cal and again fell behind 2-0 (25-21, 25-17) before winning a hard fought third set (25-23). The Vulcans regrouped, however, with a resounding 25-9 final in the decisive fourth set.
Braga again led KU in kills with eight.
Brittany Harman (Hanover, PA/South Western) picked up 15 digs. Van Buren led the team with four blocks, one more than Brumbley.
Bridget Bielich led the Vulcans with 12 kills, while Molly Delaney served up six aces.
Each of Kutztown's setters had a 14-assist match.
Dana Wright (Warminster, PA/Saint Basil Academy) had that many in the opener against IUP, while
Kimberlee Gomber (Washington, PA/Washington) matched her against California (Pa.).
Kutztown will look to get back into the win column on Saturday, September 22, when the team wraps up play at the PSAC Crossover with matches against Clarion and Slippery Rock.
