Volleyball Falls in Season Opener to Philadelphia University, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team dropped its first match of the 2012 season at Philadelphia University, 3-1, on Thursday night.
 
The Rams got off to a good start winning the first two sets (25-12, 25-23) but the Maroon and Gold rebounded to win the third, 25-16, before eventually falling in the fourth, 27-25.
 
Despite senior Brittany Harman (Hanover, PA/South Western)'s 13 kills and 23 digs, the Golden Bears could not rally in a close fourth set to send it into a decisive fifth. Harman highlighted the third set victory with eight kills, while Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach (Fairleigh Dickinson)) contributed 11 kills and 19 digs on the night. Braga also tied Danielle Carney of Philadelphia with a match-best four service aces.
 
Kutztown tallied 44 assists on the evening with 23 coming from senior Dana Wright (Warminster, PA/Saint Basil Academy) and 17 from senior Kimberlee Gomber (Washington, PA/Washington).
 
The Golden Bears will return home on Friday night when they kick off the Kutztown Classic with two matches against Virginia Union at 2:30 p.m. and Southern New Hampshire at 7:00 p.m. The team will finish out the weekend of action with another two matches on Saturday against Saint Rose at 10:00 a.m. and University of the Sciences in Philadelphia at 6:00 p.m.
