Box Score KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team put an end to No. 4 West Chester's 10 game winning streak on Saturday afternoon, battling the Rams to a 0-0 tie after two halves of overtime.
West Chester held the offensive advantage through the majority of the first half, keeping the KU defensive line on their toes.
As the Rams rained down the shots into the second half, Golden Bear goalkeeper
Alina Rakiewicz (Denver, PA/Cocalico) made two saves in less than two minutes of each other.
KU began to pick it up, and in the 74th minute, Golden Bear
Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose) came close to finding the back of the net when her open shot from outside of the top right of box was just inches too high.
The Ram's Rachel Miller also came close to scoring in the 87th minute, but Rakiewicz deflected her shot which hit the crossbar and was cleared by the KU defensive line, ending the game with a 0-0 tie to go to overtime.
The Rams opened the first overtime with high intensity, firing off three shots before KU forward
Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) managed a break away. Costello was fouled in the box, giving opportunity to Malanga for a penalty kick. Malanga's shot was saved by West Chester's goalkeeper Shannon Fedyk, and the two teams went into a second overtime with the scoreboard still reading 0-0.
Rakiewicz made two saves, and back in offensive possession with only seconds left, Costello shot the ball from 40 yards out, sailing high as the clock ran out.
West Chester held the shot advantage over the Golden Bears 26-8 and Rakiewicz finished the game with 14 saves.
The Golden Bears play their next game on the road when they travel to Gannon University on Tuesday, October 9, for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
