CHEYNEY, Pa. – Kutztown's defense limited Cheyney to just 59 passing yards and
Brett Fox (Laureldale, Pa./Muhlenburg) had a career-best 115 yards and two touchdown catches as the Golden Bears dismantled the Wolves, 56-7.
Â
The game opened with a stalled Cheyney drive, but the Wolves got the ball back after KU fumbled the punt. Kutztown's defense responded by forcing a Blazer Wasserleben fumble that
Eric Condron (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) recovered at the Kutztown 25.
Â
On the first play from scrimmage,
Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) hit
Zach Snyder (Lititz, PA/Warwick) for seven yards, the 734th pass completion of Morton's career, a new school record. The senior would go 6-of-7 on the drive, with the final completion landing in the hands of Fox for a nine-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead with 4:03 left in the first quarter.
Â
CU went three and out and Kutztown took over at its own 28 after a Cheyney punt. After another short completion to Snyder to open an offensive series, it was Fox again. Morton connected with the receiver for a 68-yard bomb that made it 14-0 with less than a minute to play in the first quarter.
Â
Early in the second quarter, Cheyney shanked a punt deep in its own territory and the Golden Bears took over at the Wolves' 30. A third-straight KU scoring drive started with a connection from Morton to Snyder, this time for 20 yards to move Kutztown to the CU 10.Â
Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) scampered into the end zone on the next play as KU took a 21-0 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half.
Â
Cheyney moved into Kutztown territory on its next series, but
Jeremy Tucker (Dover, NJ/Pope John XXIII Regional) blocked the field goal and Kutztown took over the CU 34 after the return. Morton finished off the resulting seven-play drive with a one-yard plunge, stretching the Golden Bears' lead to 28 points with 2:16 to go in the half.Â
Â
Kutztown added one more score before the half.Â
Adam Goeringer (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) forced and recovered a fumble on the kickoff after Morton's touchdown run and the Golden Bears started deep in Cheyney territory at the 17 yard line.
Â
Morton hit
Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) for the 17-yard touchdown on second down as KU went into the locker room ahead 35-0.
Â
After Kutztown failed to score on the second half's initial possession, Cheyney went for it on fourth and six at the Kutztown 31, but Leroy Stanford's pass fell incomplete.Â
Â
Kutztown took over and embarked on an 11-play drive that chewed up over four minutes of game time. Wortham rushed for 35 yards during the series and capped it with a three-yard touchdown run for a 42-0 lead with 7:08 on the clock in the third quarter.
Â
A short punt on Cheyney's next offensive possession gave the Golden Bears the ball at midfield. After gains of six and five yards,
Adrian Sterling (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg North) broke off a 40-yard touchdown that put Kutztown ahead 49-0 with 3:22 remaining in the third period.
Â
Tucker came through for the Golden Bears again on the Wolves first play of their next drive. He picked off Stanford and took it 35 yards to pay dirt for a 56-0 lead.
Â
Cheyney got on the board with the only score of the fourth quarter after a 16-play, 83-yard drive that ended with a Jay Journigan one-yard touchdown run with 3:54 to go in the game.
Â
Five different KU players carried the ball as the team churned out 180 yards rushing on the afternoon. Sterling ran eight times for a career-high 93 yards and scored on his 40-yard run. Worth rushed nine times for 53 yards and found the end zone twice.Â
Â
Morton finished his day 18-of-25 for 221 yards and three touchdowns. He ran for 25 more yards and another touchdown.
Â
Fox was Morton's primary target, hauling in five passes for 115 yards and the game's first two touchdowns.Â
Â
Defensively,
Zach Greenwald (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) continued his strong play with eight tackles.Â
Nate Falko (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) had a sack, while
Jason Ulmer (Feasterville, PA/Neshaminy), Goeringer, and
Gee White (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph) each had a tackle for loss.
Â
In addition to Tucker's pick six,
Kali Smith (Darby, PA/Penn Wood) also intercepted a Cheyney pass.
Â
For Cheyney, Wasserleben started at quarterback but was just 1-of-4 for 16 yards with an interception and a lost fumble before giving way to Stanford. Stanford was 5-of-10 for 43 yards and was picked off once.Â
Â
The Wolves rushed for 149 yards in the game, but averaged just 2.9 yards per rush on 51 attempts. Marcus Jones led the team with 53 yards on 19 carries. Justin Watkins added 52 yards on nine rushes.Â
Â
Khalif Dandy was the only CU player with more than one catch with three receptions for 40 yards.Â
Â
Shannon Burch had nine tackles including half a tackle for loss and forced fumble.
