Box Score 2 ERIE, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of 3-1 finals during a tri-match against Mercyhurst and Gannon.
In a neutral site match against the Lakers, KU staved off defeat after falling behind 2-0 (25-22, 25-15) with a 25-16 win in the third set. Mercyhurst, however, outlasted Kutztown in the fourth set, picking up a 29-27 win to seal the victory.
Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach (Fairleigh Dickinson)) turned in her 10th double-double of the year with a match-high 15 kills and 15 digs.
Brianna Risch (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) also had a match-high with eight blocks, as did
Emily Heppler (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown) with her 20 digs.
Kimberlee Gomber (Washington, PA/Washington) and
Dana Wright (Warminster, PA/Saint Basil Academy) also had double-doubles for KU. Wright led the team with 18 assists and added 10 digs. Gomber dished out 13 assists to go along with 17 digs.
Amanda Balasko led Mercyhurst with 14 kills. Kiera Rebert led all players with 45 assists, while Nicole Texido served up three aces.
KU started hot against the Golden Knights, opening the match with a 10-2 run en route to a 25-16 victory in the first set. Gannon rebounded on its home court, however, by winning the ensuing three sets and the match, 25-21, 25-8, 25-19.
Audrey Stringer (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) paced Kutztown with nine kills. Braga had eight kills and did not have an attacking error in the match. She also had 14 digs, one less than
Brittany Harman (Hanover, PA/South Western)'s team-high 15.
Nicole Brumbley (Oxford, PA/Oxford) had four blocks, while Gomber added her ninth double-double of 2012 with 16 assists and 10 digs.
Lauren Sazama led three Golden Knights in double digits with 15 kills and had 16 digs. Megan Wendel had 41 assists, 13 digs and three blocks.
Kutztown will look to get back into the win column with a road match at Edinboro on October 6.
