KU to Host Millersville on Community Night

Looking for its second straight victory, the Kutztown University football team welcomes the Millersville Marauders to University Field for Community Day and 6:05 p.m. kick off. The Golden Bears are 1-1 in night games this season, opening up the year with a 58-6 rout of Saint Anselm and a nail-biting loss to No. 10 California (Pa.) 48-45.

Complete Game Notes

Head coach Raymond Monica will try and keep the train rolling in week nine after coming back from East Stroudsburg with a 59-33 victory over the Warriors on Saturday. With six games against Millersville in his career, Monica has posted a 4-2 record, including winning the last two contests, 49-7 (2011) and 38-24 (2010).

Quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) will look to win his third consecutive game against the Marauders. He was honored by the conference for his 35-of-42 day, throwing for 490 yards and three touchdowns.

Morton ended the game with 111 career touchdown passes, 10,675 passing yards and 11,354 yards of total offense.  He passed Bob McLaughlin for third all-time in the PSAC in passing yardage. His total offense is now third all-time in the PSAC. Morton's 111 TD passes are tied for ninth in Division II history, while his 10,675 passing yards is tied for 16th and his 11,354 total yards are 14th

Morton's favorite targets Colby Tuell (Columbia, PA/Columbia) and Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) lead the conference in receptions per game, combining for 14. Tuell has been a nightmare for secondaries  all season, going for 82 yards a game and catching eight touchdowns through the first eight weeks. Mastromatto has done his share of damage when healthy, hauling in six touchdowns though six games on 45 receptions

In relief of Mastromatto, Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) has stepped into the role of play maker. The junior is averaging over six yards a carry, going for 578 yards this season with 11 touchdowns. To add to his resume, he has also been a threat in the kick return game, taking one back for a 98-yard TD against West Chester (9/22) to start the second half

In addition to Tuell and Mastromatto, a new receiver seems to steps up every week for the Maroon and Gold. Last week it was Brett Fox (Laureldale, Pa./Muhlenburg) and Zach Snyder (Lititz, PA/Warwick) as they both caught seven passes apiece and eclipsed the century mark

On the defensive side of the ball, the Golden Bears have relied on a number of people to stop opposing offenses. In his first start last week, Jeremy Tucker (Dover, NJ/Pope John XXIII Regional) recorded eight stops against East Stroudsburg to lead the team, while Greg Carroll (Unionville, PA/Unionville) added seven tackles of his own, including one for a three-yard loss

At defensive end, Zach Greenwald (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) picked up a sack last week and now has 4.5 on the season, good for tenth in the PSAC. Cory Darby (District Heights, MD/Wise) and Matt Connors (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity) also made their first sacks of the season as the Golden Bear defense had some success getting to the quarterback and slowing down ESU's passing game.

In charge of the Marauders is fifth-year head coach Greg Colby. In his tenure, the defense has improved every year and the 2010 prolific passing attack produced MU's first All-American since 2000 in wide receiver Jamal Smith. A defensive minded coach, Colby brings a wealth of experience to the Marauders after coaching for 34 years, including 10 years as a Division 1 defensive coordinator.

The Marauders come into this match up reeling from the loss to LIU Post last week in Brookville, N.Y. After falling behind early, Millersville outscored the Pioneers, 9-0, in the second half but could not mount a comeback as it fell, 20-15

The line play will dictate how this match up goes on Saturday. Millersville's Ian Sadon has been used rarely this year, but when used, he has been extremely effective. He leads the conference in yards per carry at 7.5, thanks in large part to his 75-yard touchdown scamper against LIU Post, the team's lone TD of the game

The offense features a run oriented attack with three Marauders averaging around 30 yards/game. Myron Myles gets leads the team with 249 yards this season and two scores. Ted Stachitas has also rushed 230 yards and one touchdown from the quarterback position

On the outside for Millersville is a duo of talented receivers who have each caught at least 30 passes. Mike Jones leads the group with 34 receptions for 323 yards and four touchdowns, while Dominic Sanders has hauled in 30 for 334 and two scores.

The Marauders defense stepped up against a potent LIU Post offense last week, picking off three passes and holding the Pioneers to just 20 points on the afternoon. With that performance last week, Millersville has now held back-to-back opponents to under 21 points, something they have not done since the 2007 season.

Pat Maloney and Reggie Slaton lead the defensive unit. Slaton has anchored the defensive line this season making 52 stops, including 8.5 tackles for loss which ranks in has him tied for ninth in the conference. Maloney leads the team in tackles with 55 from the linebacker position and has added one sack and one tackle for loss.

From the safety position, Rasheed Johnson had a coming out party last week against the Pioneers. The freshman recorded double-digit tackles for the first time in his collegiate career, going for 10 on the afternoon and will expect to see plenty of action against the Kutztown offense.
