Golden Bears Look for Second Straight Win

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - With its starting quarterback and starting running back in the line up again, the Kutztown University football team found its way back into the win column with a 56-49 victory over Slippery Rock last week. On Saturday, Oct. 6, the Golden Bears will make the trip to Cheyney to take on the Wolves at O'Shields-Stevenson Stadium for a scheduled 1:00 p.m. kick off.

COMPLETE GAME NOTES

The match-up marks the 63rd meeting between the two programs with KU owning a commanding lead in the series, 51-10-1, including an 18-game winning streak. Last season, Cheyney was one of two teams the Kutztown defense shut out on their way to a 49-0 win.

As KU notched its second win of the season last week, head coach Raymond Monica picked up his 40th overall victory in charge of the Maroon and Gold. In doing so, Monica became the third coach in the program's history to reach 40. With three more wins at Kutztown, Monica would move into a tie for second place all-time with Joe Patton who spent 13 seasons here from 1947-59.

In his return from injury, senior quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) threw for 301 yards and five scores as he eclipsed the century mark for passing touchdowns in a career, only the 19th person in Division II to reach 100. He has also thrown for 9,485 career yards which is tops for KU and fifth all-time in PSAC history.

Senior running back Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) also returned from injury, boasting an average of 7.2 yards a carry last week on five carries, scoring one touchdown. Junior Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) punched in the other TD as the two of them went for 36 yards apiece on the ground.

As for Morton's options to throw to, senior Colby Tuell (Columbia, PA/Columbia) caught 10 passes last week for 70 yards, catching two of Morton's five touchdowns. The 10-reception game by Tuell tallied the fourth straight week a Golden Bear receiver has hauled in double-digit receptions as he and sophomore Shahaid Smith (Ridley, PA/Ridley) have done it twice each. Tuell leads the receiving core with six touchdowns and 36 receptions, while Smith is the only other receiver to have over 300 yards, averaging just under 10 yards a catch. Mastromatto is also a threat out of the slot as he has caught 21 passes and four touchdowns in just three games this season.

Fresh off of his PSAC-East Defensive Player of the Week honors from the Slippery Rock game, sophomore Zach Greenwald (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) will look to continue his dominance on the line. The 6-2 defensive end had a stellar week five making 13 stops, including 2.0 for a loss and 1.5 sacks. He also forced a fumble as SRU was threatening deep in KU territory with the score tied at 49 to get the ball back to the offense that put together a game-winning drive with five minutes remaining in regulation.

Helping him out up front will be freshman Tyrone Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) who has stepped into his role nicely, complimenting Greenwald. Brown is second on the line in tackles with 18 as he has registered a half sack and one tackle for a loss.

Behind them will be leading tackler, sophomore Sam Dixon-Dougan and junior Matt Connors (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity). Dixon-Dougan paces the defense with 39 tackles while Connors adds 23 of his own. Connors is coming off a performance that helped lock up the team's second victory, recovering two fumbles.

In the defensive secondary for the Maroon and Gold, senior Jason Ulmer (Feasterville, PA/Neshaminy) and sophomore Greg Carroll (Unionville, PA/Unionville) will patrol the middle of the field. Ulmer has been consistent throughout his career, proving to be a reliable asset to the teams pass defense while Carroll has stepped up when given the opportunity. Carroll made 17 stops against Bloomsburg, something no Kutztown defensive player has done since 2007.

As for Cheyney, the Wolves are led by head coach Ken Lockard who is serving his first full year at the helm after acting as the interim head coach in 2011. He arrived at Cheyney in 2008 and was the defensive coordinator until last year.

The offense features a run heavy attack that has two people over 200 yards and four over 25 attempts this season. Quarterback Blaze Wasserleben leads the team with 273 yards rushing and one score while Marcus Jones put together a solid game against Mercyhurst last week, going for 110 yards on the ground.

Through the air, Wasserleben carries over a 93 pass efficiency rating into Saturday, throwing for 368 yards and four scores. On the longest play of the Wolves season, Wasserleben hit Justin Watkins for a 92-yard touchdown.

Linebacker Isaiah Fleming leads the defense with 48 tackles as he has also proved to be a threat in the passing game, returning an interception for 39 yards. Second on the team in tackles is Khalil Neal who has posted 35 including 6.5 for loss. At the corner position, Nafis Muhammad and Jamil Williams will have their hands full this weekend. Williams has broken up three passes this season and made 16 tackles while Muhammad has recorded 14 tackles.
