Golden Bears Head to East Stroudsburg

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Kutztown University football team hits the road for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East clash against the East Stroudsburg Warriors on Saturday afternoon at 1:05 p.m.

COMPLETE GAME NOTES

With a tough challenge ahead for the Maroon and Gold, Head Coach Raymond Monica will to try regroup after a homecoming loss to Shippensburg in Week 7. The match up marks the seventh time these two programs have met under the direction of Monica with the Warriors holding the advantage, 4-2. Despite the record, Kutztown has won the last two meetings, 49-32 (2011) and 38-31 (2010).

The offense will feature the highly potent aerial attack that saw quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) throw for a school-record 479 yards and three touchdowns against Shippensburg. Regardless of the offensive numbers put up by the Golden Bears last week, untimely turnovers put the team in a hole they were not able to climb out of.

Although the senior quarterback has missed time to injury this season, he still finds himself ranked in the top of the PSAC. He is 49 yards shy of reaching 2,000 yards this season and is second in the conference in TD passes with 23, while throwing for over 325 yards a game which ranks third.

In the back field, running backs Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) and Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) will share the duties carrying the ball. In Mastromatto's absence to injury earlier this season, Wortham stepped into the role exceptionally well and finds himself in the upper echelon of tailbacks in the PSAC. His eight touchdowns ranks third in the conference while his average of six yards a carry is also in the top 10.

Mastromatto is tied for the conference lead with seven receptions a game as he is picking up almost nine yards a catch. To go along with those numbers, the senior has scored five times through the air and twice on the ground.

Tied for the conference lead in receptions per game, Colby Tuell (Columbia, PA/Columbia) also brings in seven a game. Tuell has stepped up in his senior campaign as he is first in receptions (49), fourth in receiving touchdowns (7) and sixth in yards (558) in the conference.

Opposite of Tuell, it seems as if a new face shows up every week. The Golden Bears have seen promising things all around the receiving group in Shahaid Smith (Ridley, PA/Ridley), Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic), Zach Snyder (Lititz, PA/Warwick) and Brett Fox (Laureldale, Pa./Muhlenburg). Smith is second on the team in receptions with 43 while Fox has been a red zone threat, scoring five times this season.

On the defensive side of the ball, Zach Greenwald (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) has been the anchor of the defense, earning Defensive Player of the Week honors already this year and leading the unit in tackles for loss (5.5), sacks (3.5) and forced fumbles (4), to go with his 52 tackles.

Behind the line, Sam Dixon-Dougan likes to fly to the ball, pacing the team with 55 stops. Of his 55 tackles, he has recorded one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss while forcing one fumble.  Next to him at the other linebacker position, Matt Connors (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity) has played solid making 30 tackles, intercepting one pass and recovering two fumbles.

With all of the changes to injury in the secondary, Jason Ulmer (Feasterville, PA/Neshaminy) has been one of the more consistent defenders. Ulmer has started all seven games this season registering 38 tackles with 2.5 for loss. Kali Smith (Darby, PA/Penn Wood), English Peay (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington), Alex Nicolino (Ridley, PA/Ridley) and Cody Kelso (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora (Wagner)) have all seen their share of action on the on the outside while the veteran Cory Darby (District Heights, MD/Wise) has continued his solid career, making 28 this season playing closer to the line.

Leading the Warriors in his 39th season as the head coach, Denny Douds will try to get his squad above the .500 mark this season. Douds has led East Stroudsburg to nine PSAC titles and four NCAA playoff berths in his tenure since taking over in 1974.

Last time out for the Warriors, ESU fell at No. 6 Bloomsburg, 48-27. The score is a bit misleading as ESU found itself down just 21-17 late in the third quarter before the Huskies pulled away.

Completing 13 passes in the losing effort, quarterback Matt Soltes hit eight different targets on the afternoon with one touchdown to Robert Bleiler. In addition to his passing, Soltes is a threat with his legs as he rushed for 54 yards, including a long of 18.

On the ground, Kendrick Williams will get a bulk of the carries entering his third season as the starting tailback. With his 38-yard performance last week, the veteran surpassed the 2,000 yard mark for his career to go with 23 total touchdowns.

Dusty Reed leads a talented group of receivers with 517 yards this season and three touchdowns.  Jordan Hallman has stepped up in the red zone as five of his 15 catches this season have been for scores.

Back up wide receiver Brandon Mercer has found a way onto the field through special teams. He has been a nuisance all season returning kicks, averaging 34 yards a return and one touchdown.

On defense, the Warriors are led by a very young and talented line backing group. Cody Simcox is second on the team in tackles with 38 including one for a loss and a recovered fumble. Right next to him is Don Kinney Jr. who has tallied 37 stops with five coming in the backfield. Along with them, Darius Jackson has put together a solid season, highlighted by earning the PSAC East Player of the Week honors for his five tackles and one interception against over West Chester in Week 6.
