KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Coming off a much needed two-game win streak, the Kutztown University football team returns to University Field for Homecoming Weekend and a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against Shippensburg on Saturday, October 13.
COMPLETE GAME NOTES
With the win last week at Cheyney, seventh year head coach Raymond Monica grabbed his 41st victory in the Maroon and Gold. He is currently tied for second all-time with Joe Patton who spent 13 seasons (1947-59) in charge of the KU football program.
Coming back from injury, quarterback
Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) has picked up right where he left off, breaking records. Leading Kutztown to its 19th straight victory over Cheyney, the senior ended his afternoon with 751 career completions, surpassing Andy Breautt's 733. He now has 9,706 career passing yards and 10,413 total yards. With three passing touchdowns in the win, he also moved into 14th place in Division II history with 105 career passing TDs.
Also not shy of breaking records, running back
Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) who was sidelined with a hand injury has come back in stride. Last week, the senior added the career kick return yardage to his resume along with the career kick return average mark. Catching his 18th career touchdown pass last week, he moved into a fifth-place tie with Dom Mele for receiving scores.
When Mastromatto is not rushing the ball,
Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) and
Adrian Sterling (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg North) will see action in the backfield. Wortham has been a consistent back throughout his career while Sterling was a pleasant surprise against the Wolves, rushing for 87 yards and one score on just eight carries.
Wide out
Zach Snyder (Lititz, PA/Warwick) proved to be the catalyst in week 6, catching the first pass of each of the first three touchdown drives against the CU. While
Colby Tuell (Columbia, PA/Columbia) and
Shahaid Smith (Ridley, PA/Ridley) were held in check last week,
Brett Fox (Laureldale, Pa./Muhlenburg) took advantage of his opportunity by having a career day. Fox caught five balls for 115 yards and two scores to lead the receiving corps.
Kicker
Jack Ruggieri (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) sits second all-time in the programs history for converting 103 career extra point attempts. The sophomore has converted all 36 attempts this season and has hit four of his six field goal attempts for 48 points, including a season-long 41 yarder against West Chester (9/22).
Zach Greenwald (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) continued his dominance last week after receiving the PSAC East Defensive Player of the week prior by registering eight stops to lead a group that gave up just seven points and 59 passing yards.
At the linebacker position, a pair of underclassmen shined. Freshman
Adam Goeringer (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) and sophomore Sam Dixon-Dougan helped hold the rushing attack in check as Goeringer posted six stops and Dixon-Dougan made five.
The secondary had an outstanding game against Cheyney not allowing the Wolves to break a big play.
Jason Ulmer (Feasterville, PA/Neshaminy) came up to make six tackles, while
Kali Smith (Darby, PA/Penn Wood) and
Matt Galloway (Elverson, PA/St. Pius X) each made three. Smith and converted tailback
Jeremy Tucker (Dover, NJ/Pope John XXIII Regional) picked up their first interceptions as Golden Bears to seal the victory as the defense held an opponent to under 10 points.
The Red Raiders enter Saturday's contest with a 6-0 record under second year head coach Mark Maciejewski. Dating back to last season, Shippensburg has been on a tear, winning its last 10 games under Maciejewski.
Behind quarterback Zach Zulli, Shippensburg's offense sits up top of the PSAC, averaging 50 points a game while the defensive ranks second, allowing 19 points a game. Through the first half of the season, Zulli has been a problem for opposing defenses, throwing for 24 touchdowns and just three interceptions while boasting a 185.2 pass efficiency rating. In his impressive start, he has been selected as the PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week four times this season.
His backfield mate, running back Mike Frenette, has been just as affective for the offense. Frenette is averaging over 80 yards a game, reaching the end zone seven times which is good for fourth in the conference. He has also has been a threat out of the backfield hauling in 21 receptions for 242 yards and one touchdown.
Zulli's favorite targets on the outside are Jacob Baskerville and Trevor Harman. Baskerville leads the team in receptions (30) and yards (567) and is tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns with five. On the other side, Harman has brought in 28 passes for 422 yards and scored five touchdowns of his own, averaging 15 yards a catch.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Raiders lead the conference in sacks, piling up 21 on the year as they are one of the more stingy groups in the PSAC. Defensive end Jake Metz has wreaked havoc all season, tallying six sacks as Dainen Green has made 3.5 from the other side of the line.
Linebackers Cody Fleming and Brian Sourber pace the defense in tackles, each making 41. Fleming leads the team with 12 tackles for loss while Sourber has registered 3.5. In the secondary, Avery Miles is in his third season as a starter with 30 tackles and three pass break ups. Alongside him will be Tyriq Kershaw who has made 23 tackles and five pass break ups from his safety position.
