School record offensive outburst lifts Kutztown past Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The nationally-ranked Kutztown University football team set a school record for total yards in its 56-30 season-opening victory over Saint Anselm College in a non-conference game at Grappone Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Kutztown, ranked 20th by d2football.com and 23rd by the American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA), finished with 697 yards as a team, the most since they tallied 627 against Bloomsburg in 2007. Kutztown rushed for 384 yards as senior Robbie Frey (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) and junior Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) each topped the 100-yard mark, becoming the first KU pair to do that in the same game on the ground since Maurice Adams and Tony Bria did it in 2005 against Mansfield.

Frey led KU with 140 yards on 16 carries. Two of his carries resulted in touchdowns. In addition to rushing for 120 yards on 11 carries, Mastromatto returned four kickoffs for 126 yards. Sophomore Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) added a career-high 78 yards on nine carries.

"We were able to run the ball and control the clock," Kutztown head football coach Raymond Monica said. "All of my running backs did an outstanding job. It was a productive day. We had some big plays. Anytime, you score 56 points, it's a good day. Once we watch the film, we're going to try to get better from the mistakes we made today and come back next week.

Junior quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) threw a career-high six touchdown passes for the Golden Bears, who won their fourth straight season opener for the first time in program history. In extending his consecutive game streak to 18 with at least one touchdown pass, Morton threw for 313 yards on 21-of-38 passing.

Kutztown's offense provided the sun-splashed spectators with more entertainment than Beyonce's performance during last week's Video Music Awards. The Golden Bears had 26 plays that covered 10 or more yards, including 11 that went for at least 20 yards. Frey, Mastromatto, and Wortham all had at least one carry that went for 20 or more yards.

"The offensive line did a great job today and carried us through the game," Morton said. "The backs also did a good job of getting in there, making plays and breaking tackles."

The Golden Bears scored two touchdowns in each quarter to finish with their highest point total in a season-opener since they scored 59 points against Spring City in 1923. This was also KU's highest point total under Monica.

Erik Frazier (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown) led Kutztown with six catches for 82 yards. However, Chris McCormick (West Chester/West Chester East) electrified the crowd as three of his four catches went for touchdowns. It was the first time in McCormick's career he caught three touchdown passes in a single game. With 17 touchdown receptions, McCormick moved into fifth place on the all-time KU list in that category.

McCormick caught touchdown passes of 17, 56, and 43 yards. His first two scores in the first quarter gave the Golden Bears a 14-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game. However, after Saint Anselm sliced KU's advantage to 21-17 midway through the second quarter, the Golden Bear offensive line took control.

With Rob Kee (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks South), Aaron McGlynn (Harleysville/Souderton), Chris Oliver (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown), John Zavorski (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy), Nick Maloney (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) and Justin Clark (Kennett Square, PA/Kennett) leading the way, Morton was not sacked and Kutztown averaged 8.2 yards on the ground. The Golden Bears ran for 261 yards after intermission.

In the third quarter with KU leading, 28-17, Wortham caught his first career touchdown and Frey sprinted 42 yards up the middle after breaking three tackles to help KU open a 42-24 bulge after three periods. Mastromatto and Josh Smith (West Lawn, PA/Wilson) caught touchdown passes in the final quarter to finish the scoring for Kutztown.

"We are a consistent line and have tremendous chemistry with each other, so I think that helped us today," Kee said. "We love to run the ball and today was a lot of fun. We know as a team, it's important for us to have a balanced offense. To be able to the run the ball the way we did today was a nice way to start the season."

Defensively, Kutztown forced four turnovers. Alex DiNolfi (Norristown, PA/Norristown) and Greg Carroll (Unionville, PA/Unionville) had interceptions. DiNolfi and Richard White recovered fumbles. Though, the Hawks scored plenty of points, the Golden Bear defense made plays when they were necessary. Andrew Hodges (Ridley, PA/Ridley) led KU with nine tackles. John Kreuer (York, PA/York Suburban) and Colin Henny (Lititz, PA/Manheim Twp.) added 5.5 tackles each. Brett Moss (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) had a quarterback sack and Chris Davidson (Lancaster, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) had a pair of pass breakups.

"The turnovers were a big key for us," Monica said. "That's something we have to continue doing. It was a staple of last year's team."

Kutztown hits the road next Saturday for another long road trip. The Golden Bears visit 17th-ranked Mercyhurst in a game beginning at noon from Tuillo Field.
