KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 23, 2011) – The Kutztown University women's field hockey team will host Long Island University C.W. Post for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division game Saturday, Sept. 24 at University Field beginning at 7 p.m.
KU (6-1, 2-0 PSAC East) enters the contest ranked sixth in the latest Kookaburra / National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) top 10 poll. After their first loss of the season against Indiana (Pa.) University 4-3 in overtime, KU is determined to keep putting more wins on the board.
“I'm very confident in our team,”
Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) said. “Every time we step on the field, we try to get better. Everyone's trying to do their job and that's all you can ask for.”
After Kutztown's 4-1 win over East Stroudsburg University on Wednesday, junior
Emily Labowitz (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion) stepped up once again, scoring back-to-back goals. Labowitz and junior
Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) have come together and shown consistent teamwork throughout the season. The pair lead the team in points average and shots on goal.
In the past seven games, KU's top scorers have been Gregory, Labowitz and
Jamie Koenig (Springtown, PA/Palisades). Only a sophomore, Koenig leads the team with 27 shots on goal.
“It is an honor to be in the same ranking with these two upper classmen,” Koenig said. “We work hard towards a common goal and play well together. As a competitive player, I am ready for the challenge.”
Goalies
Emily Falko (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) and
Karly Waltman (Birdsboro, PA/Twin Valley) have both seen time in the net for the Golden Bears. In three games, Falko has tabbed 23 saves. Waltman has recorded 16 saves.
C.W. Post (4-2, 1-1 PSAC East) is ranked ninth in the NFHCA top 10 poll. The Pioneers dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 2 West Chester University. Freshman forward Lyn-Marie Wilson scored C.W. Post's only goal and her first collegiate goal on a rebound shot into the right corner on a pass from senior defender Helene Bruckner.
Sophomore Carlee Dragon leads the Pioneers with17 points on seven goals and three assists. Dragon leads the nation in points per game (3.40) and goals per game (1.40). Goalie Devon Trenkle has 34 saves this season.
The Golden Bears move into next week's schedule, on Tuesday, Sept. 27 when they travel to top-ranked Bloomsburg University for a PSAC East game. The game will begin at 7 p.m.
