CALIFORNIA, Pa. (November 4, 2011)—The Kutztown University women's soccer team set a school record for wins in a season when it defeated Slippery Rock University, 4-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) semifinals match earlier Friday afternoon, hosted by California (Pa.).
(BOXSCORE)
The Golden Bears (16-4 overall) will advance to the PSAC Championship where they will face top-seeded California (Pa.) on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. Kutztown will be the second seed.
Admission is free for any students at PSAC institutions that have a valid ID. Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $2 for students.
The Vulcans (17-0-2) defeated fourth-seeded Edinboro, 5-1 earlier on Friday. Cal is making its second consecutive trip the PSAC Championship. The Vulcans fell to West Chester last year off penalty kicks.
KU is ranked 17th in the National Soccer Coaches of Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 poll. Cal is ranked fourth.
Friday's game featured so many emotions from the Golden Bears. Anxiety, excitement, motivation, and delight were instilled in KU since its arrival to California (Pa.) on Thursday evening. Those emotions never left their side as the 2011 squad became the best team in the history of the Kutztown University women's soccer program. KU broke the previous school record of 15 wins set in 2009, on Friday with its16th victory of the 2011 season against Slippery Rock.
Kutztown snapped the Rock's 11-game winning streak and 11 consecutive shutout streak with the win.
Sarah Black (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) was phenomenal for the Golden Bears in Friday's game. Black, who came off the bench scored Kutztown's first two goals to give KU the 2-0 lead in the first half. “The Black Attack”, occurred in the 17th minute when Black boosted a 20-yarder that surged high and right to land in the back of the net. Black's first goal was assisted by
Maria Borland (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown).
“The Black Attack” struck again in the 26th minute when Black connected with the ball to score just nine minutes later.
“I definitely have chills just thinking about it,” Black said. “I just had to focus and do what Coach always asks me to do, which is shoot across the face, low, hard, and in the corner. That's exactly what I did and it feels amazing. I did it all for the team.”
Kutztown's team effort has been one of the factors that have led to its success this year.
Crystal Zerbe (Myerstown, PA/Tulpehocken) tallied her fifth goal of the season when she scored in the 40th minute to give the Golden Bears the solid 3-0 lead before halftime. Zerbe's goal was assisted by
Rubi Mink (West Milford, N.J./West Milford).
The Rock's continued pressure and determination never seized but it wasn't enough to stop the Golden Bears.
In the 59th minute,
Janine Valerio (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) pushed the lead further out of Slippery Rock's hands when she scored her sixth goal of the year, giving KU the 4-0 advantage. Samantha Moyer was credited with the assist.
The Golden Bears outshot the Rock 16-10.
SRU goalie Lisa Rodgers recorded a game-high seven saves.
Defensively, KU goalie
Casey Behrendt (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) recorded her 11th shutout of the season. Behrendt tallied three saves against the Rock. The back line of
Laura Hearn (Wall, N.J./St. Rose),
BrieAnn Shipkowski (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central), and
Mollie O'Brien (Silverdale, PA/Pennridge) also displayed astounding efforts to prevent Slippery Rock from scoring.
“It feels really good,” Behrendt said. “I'm happy that we played really well today. The connection with the back line is really great and we all know how to read each other. They did a great job today. Tomorrow we are going to go out and give it our all. We've been working all season to reach this point.”
“This point” or the PSAC Championship is a phase that Kutztown knows all too well. The Golden Bears have reached the championship game three times in its history, but has never won a title. Kutztown lost to West Chester in the title game in 2009, in 2005 against Slippery Rock and in 2004 against Indiana (Pa.).
“It's a great feeling,” Kutztown University head coach
Erik Burstein said. “It's exciting to get a quality win over a good team like Slippery Rock in the semifinals. The manner in which we did it was amazing. We're looking forward to tomorrow. Adrenaline, motivation, and determination are all going to take a part in tomorrow's game. Tactics are great, but at the end of the day we have to have some tactics with a huge amount of desire and drive to win the game.”
