Kutztown wins regular season finale, 4-0 over Mansfield

Mansfield, Pa. (October 29, 2011)—Sophomore Megan Black (Yardville, NJ/Steinert) of the Kutztown University women's soccer team led the Golden Bears with two goals, to clinch a 4-0 victory over Mansfield University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest, Saturday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears (14-4 overall, 11-3 PSAC) will be the No.2 seed in the PSAC playoffs, which they will host on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Gannon University will be Kutztown's opponent in the quarterfinal match. KU defeated Gannon earlier this season 4-1.

The Mounties fell to 2-15 overall and 0-14 in the PSAC.

Kutztown scored all four goals in the first half.

Janine Valerio (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) scored her fifth goal of the season early in the wet, snowy game when she connected with Tess Arbegast (Carlisle, PA/Big Spring)'s 30-yard pass, to put KU up 1-0.

Black scored her first goal of the year in the 28th minute when she stole the ball from a Mansfield defender to hit the back right corner of the net from 18 yards out to give Kutztown the 2-0 advantage.

Bella Jaffin (Nescopeck, PA/Berwick Area) found the rhythm six minutes later to give the Golden Bears the 3-0 lead. This is Jaffin's second consecutive game where she has scored a goal.

Black sealed the deal when she scored the final goal in the 39th minute off Katie Oliveri (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg)'s header that ricocheted off the crossbar.

Kutztown recorded its 13th shutout of the year, and is one shy of breaking the single-season record.

The Golden Bears out-shot the Mounties 41-4. Mansfield didn't have any shots on goal. This is the first game this season that goalie Casey Behrendt (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) didn't record any saves. Jess Campbell (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) saw time in the goalie position for the first time this season, taking over in the second half.

Goalie Alexis Wilhelm recorded six saves in the first half for the Mounties, while Alana Krieger finished with eight in the second half.

Kutztown is more than ready to enter the postseason. The Golden Bears have multiple players stepping up at any given time, which makes them a solid, well-rounded team that's capable of making its postseason dreams come true.
