WEEK 7 PREVIEW: No. 20 Kutztown looking for road win against Millersville

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (October 12, 2011)—The nationally-ranked Kutztown University football team will make a visit to Millersville University on Saturday, Oct. 15 for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)  East Division night game at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium beginning at 7:30 p.m.  (GAME NOTES)  (PSAC RELEASE)

The Golden Bears (5-1 overall, 2-1 PSAC East) enter the contest ranked 20th in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Top 25 poll after knocking off East Stroudsburg University in a 49-32 victory at University Field last weekend. KU is ranked 19th in the d2football.com Top 25 poll. This is the first time this season that Kutztown is ranked higher in the d2football.com poll than the AFCA Division II Top 25 poll.  Millersville (2-4 overall, 1-2 PSAC East) suffered a 24-6 setback to C.W. Post University on Saturday.

The game will be broadcast live on WEEU-830 AM based out of Reading beginning at 7:15 p.m. with the pregame show. Steve Degler and Steve Hahn will call the action. Fans throughout the world can listen to the game at www.kubears.com.

This will be the 86th meeting between KU and MU. The Marauders lead the series 57-24-3. In their last meeting, Kutztown grabbed a 38-28 victory.  Bloomsburg University and C.W. Post are the only schools in the East that are undefeated in division play, while California (Pa.) and Slippery Rock University are unbeaten in the West. West Chester University is tied for third with Kutztown in the East Division and both teams still have a chance for contention at a divisional title.

Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) was an unstoppable force for the Golden Bears against ESU. Mastromatto was named PSAC East Co-Offensive Player of the Week following the victory over the Warriors. Mastromatto set a KU school record after he returned a 100-yard kickoff for a touchdown late in the first half. That marked the first 100-yard kickoff return in the PSAC since 2006. Mastromatto tops the PSAC in kick return average (32.0). KU leads Division II in average kickoff return at 31.92.

Mastromatto picked up a career-high 291 all-purpose yards to cap off the day. His 291 yards is just 17 shy of the school record. The unshakeable junior running back has scored 18 touchdowns in his last 17 games.

Mastromatto wasn't the only Golden Bear with a career-high game on Saturday. Robbie Frey (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) ran for a career-high 158 yards on 22 carries to lead the second-ranked rushing offense in the PSAC.  He rushed for two touchdowns.

Mastromatto and Frey have been a dynamic duo on every kick return. Kutztown averaged 50.2 yards/return Saturday.  Frey is 13th in Division II in rushing (114.33/game). This season KU has picked up 1,381 rushing yards while its opponents have gained 838 yards.

The “Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) Mania” continued on Saturday with Morton completing 27-of-30 passes. He leads the PSAC in passing efficiency (65.5%) and is 21st in Division II. KU still leads the PSAC in scoring offense, averaging 40.8 points per game and total offense (504.3 yards/game). Morton has 19 TD passes this season and has thrown two or more TD passes in 20 of the last 23 games.

Freshman Daniel Gay (York, PA/West York Area) caught his first touchdown of his career against ESU.  Gay hauled in a 27-yarder from Morton in the second quarter.

Senior Erik Frazier (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown) who leads KU in receiving yards (407), recorded his second 100-yard receiving game of the year.  He had 118 yards on eight catches, including a 25-yard TD to open the game.

The third quarter has proven to be when Kutztown's offense strikes the hardest. The Golden Bears have scored 84 points this year in the third quarter alone. When in the redzone, Kutztown has an 80% chance of scoring a TD.

Defensively, linebacker John Kreuer (York, PA/York Suburban) had one of three KU interceptions, and succeeded in taking his 60 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter last week.  Andrew Hodges (Ridley, PA/Ridley) and Alex DiNolfi (Norristown, PA/Norristown) each picked off ESU's Ray Wagner.  DiNolfi leads KU with five interceptions this year as the KU defense has forced a turnover in 16 of its last 18 games. Hodges leads Kutztown in tackles with 53, followed by Kreuer (36).

Kutztown leads the PSAC with 13 defensive interceptions, a total made more impressive by the fact that the Golden Bears made a combined total of just 16 picks over the last two seasons. However, despite leading the league in picks, Kutztown has given up the most passing yards in the conference, both overall and per game with 1,707 and 284.5 per game, respectively.

The Marauders committed four turnovers, three inside their own territory against C.W. Post last week in its first home game of the season. Millersville surrendered the opening drive for a touchdown for the Pioneers.  Millersville finished with 104 yards of offense including 41 through the air which is the fewest by a Marauder team since totaling 25 on Oct. 27, 2007, against Cheyney University. Marquis White, who, played in his first game at running back, led the team with 65 yards and broke off a 52-yard TD run that was the longest running play from scrimmage by a Marauder runner this year. In the previous two games, White was playing as a cornerback.

The Marauders also tried two different quarterbacks. Starter Dan Miller went 5-for-10 for 27 yards and an interception. Freshman Sean Quarterman completed his first pass but missed on his next six. The two were sacked a total of six times.

The defense turned in a stout effort, holding C.W. Post to 318 yards of offense and 24 points despite the Pioneers starting 10 of their 17 drives in Millersville territory.

Kutztown will pay a visit to Brookville, NY when it faces C.W. Post for a PSAC East Division game on Saturday, Oct.22. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
