CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's swimming team concluded its regular season schedule by defeating Lock Haven University, 83-46, and Mansfield, 126-20, in the California (Pa.) Vulcan Challenge Dual Meet Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears also finished second as a team with 697 points in the meet.
Kutztown bounced back from its first defeat of the season, a 68-63 setback to California, Pa. Friday evening. That match was ultimately decided by two-tenths of second. Cal also won the overall team title with 813 points. Lock Haven was third with 494 points and Mansfield finished fourth with 150.
The Golden Bears (9-1 overall) were led by
Jess Mape (Camp Hill, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and
Jordan Shapiro (Yardville, N.J./Princeton). Mape won the 200-yard breaststroke in a meet and California pool record time of 2 minutes, 27.27 seconds. It concluded a nice weekend for Mape, who set a meet record in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:12.76 Friday night.
Meanwhile, Shapiro, who had a personal best in the 200-yard freestyle Friday night, added a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:13.30.
"The team is really tired and ready to taper for conference championships," Kutztown head coach
Tim Flannery said. "We got a lot of good swims this weekend. I am definitely encouraged by what the team did during this meet."
In addition to victories, by Mape and Shapiro,
Nikki Hinsdale (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin) and
Alexandra Crigler (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) turned in personal best efforts in the 400-yard individual medley. Hinsdale finished third in the event (4:50.28),
Kerry Choplin (Thorofare, N.J./West Deptford) was fourth (4:50.63), and Crigler was fifth (4:51.89). Those efforts earned both ladies a spot on the KU all-time top 10 list in that event. Hinsdale's time is the sixth best in KU history in the 400 IM and Crigler's is the eighth fastest time.
Kutztown begins preparations for the 2011 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship meet, which will take place from Thursday, Feb. 17 through Sunday, Feb. 20 at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg. The Golden Bears placed fourth at the PSAC championships last season.
