RESULTS
CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's swimming team dropped a 68-63 decision against California University of Pennsylvania Friday night in the first day of competition at the Vulcan Dual Meet Challenge Invitational.
The Golden Bears (9-1 overall) won three of the seven events swam Friday night and had two swimmers achieve new meet records.
Alexandra Crigler (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) won the 1,000-yard freestyle and set a new meet record with a time of 10 minutes, 46.11 seconds. Crigler broke the record by 20.14 seconds which was previously set by April Staniszewski in 2008.
Jess Mape (Camp Hill, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) also set a meet record in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:12.76. She broke the record by 3.43 seconds set in 2010.
Also swimming well Friday night were
Allison Sheely (Enola, Pa./Trinity) and
Jordan Shapiro (Yardville, N.J./Princeton). Sheely won the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 28.78. Shapiro finished fourth (30.10)
Shapiro also had a personal best in the 200-yard freestyle. She finished second overall with a time of 1:58.53.
"I am pretty happy with how the girls swam tonight," said head women's swimming coach
Tim Flannery. "Jordan and the rest of the girls did a great job tonight."
Kutztown returns to the pool tomorrow as it continues to compete at this year's Vulcan Dual Meet Challenge Invitational.
