Freshmen get chance to shine in victories over Cheyney

CHEYNEY, PA (September 25, 2010) – Several Kutztown University volleyball players had efforts to remember during a pair of 3-0 victories over Cheyney University in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener at Cope Hall Friday night. The Golden Bears (12-3 overall, 2-3 PSAC) ran their winning streak to four games by claiming the first match by scores of 25-4, 25-14, 25-7 and the second match by scores of 25-10, 25-15, 25-7.

 

In the opening game, sophomore setter Kimberlee Gomber led the way with 10 assists and a career best nine service aces. Brittany Harman collected a career best seven kills. Junior Cali Snell contributed six kills for the Golden Bears. Freshman Emily Heppler had a career best five kills. With a tough match against West Chester looming Saturday afternoon, the Golden Bears were able to give everybody on their roster significant action.

 

Also in the opening match, Kutztown registered 35 kills. Freshman Jordan Laverty had a pair of assists and digs. Freshman Nicole Brumbley had two kills and three assists. Senior Megan O'Connell had a team-high six digs.

 

The second game belonged to freshman Liz DiValerio, who had a career best four kills and four service aces. Heppler had a career best five service aces. Overall, KU finished with 19 service aces in the second match. Harman, Kelsea Ashworth, Erin Kissling and Cait Hess all contributed three kills each. Dana Wright finished with a team-high seven digs.

 

Kutztown returns to Keystone Arena to host West Chester University in a Saturday afternoon matinee at beginning at 1 p.m. This is the start of a three-match homestand.
