HOWELL, NJ (November 5, 2010) – The Kutztown University women's bowling team won three of five baker matches on the first day of the Farleigh-Dickinson University Jamboree Friday afternoon at Howell Lanes.
Kutztown, ranked ninth in the National Tenpins Coaches' Association top 20 poll, defeated Hampton, 810-734, Howard, 770-584 and Delaware State, 769-740. The Golden Bears lost to Vanderbilt, 792-627 and Morgan State, 760-726. Kutztown's overall record improved to 12-3 on the season.
Vanderbilt is ranked fourth in the NTCA poll.
The Golden Bears are still in contention for the overall team title as they sit in fourth place with 3702 pins. Kutztown is ranked behind Maryland-Eastern Shore (3904), New Jersey City (3797) and FDU (3720) in the 18-team field.
“After being in first place after match number one, we were equally poor against Vanderbilt,” Kutztown head women's bowling coach Joe Ambrose said. “I was happy that we came back strong and had two close matches to finish the day. We need to adjust quicker and we have five tough team matches on Saturday.”
Kutztown was led in Baker Frame average by Deanna DiRado (Greensburg, PA/Greensburg Salem) (20.44), Sam Santoro (19.62) and Kayla Jones (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop ) (19.55). Santoro filled 87 percent of her frames while DiRado led in strike percentage at 51.9 percent.
Kutztown returns to action Saturday when it battles it battles UMES, Florida A&M, Sam Houston State, Sacred Heart and Bethune-Cookman College. The traditional team matches start at 10:40 a.m.
