Kutztown drops season-opener to fifth-ranked Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA, PA (November 17, 2010) – The Kutztown University women's basketball team placed three players in double figures during its 83-61 season-opening defeat to nationally-ranked Holy Family University at the Campus Center Wednesday evening.(BOXSCORE)
 
The Golden Bears (0-1 overall) were led by seniors Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) and Kristen Murray (Harrisburg, PA/Trinity), each of whom finished with 12 points. Sophomore Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) contributed a career-high 10 points and nine rebounds for Kutztown. Also turning in a strong effort in her collegiate debut for KU was freshman Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin), who knocked down three 3-pointers.
 
McQuade, who added seven rebounds and four assists, moved into sole possession of sixth place on Kutztown's all-time scoring list. She entered the game tied with Patti Blackmon for sixth on the all-time list. McQuade now has 1,178 career points. McQuade also moved past Becky Savage and into fifth-place on the Golden Bear all-time rebound list. She has 726 career rebounds.
 
Holy Family, ranked fifth in the preseason Women's Association of Basketball Coaches' (WBCA) top 25 poll, had five players reach double figures for the second straight game. Catherine Carr led the Tigers (2-0) with 15 points. Kelly Brady had a team-high seven rebounds for Holy Family.
 
The Golden Bears started strong by opening a 7-3 lead on a McQuade's first basket of the 2010-11 season. Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) scored the Golden Bears' first points of the season on a pair of foul shots 37 seconds into the contest. Erin Mann's basket with 12 minutes, 43 seconds remaining in the first half gave Holy Family the lead for good, 10-9.
 
Kutztown returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Wilmington University in its home opener starting at 1 p.m. This is the start of a four-game home stand for Kutztown.
