SLIPPERY ROCK, PA (October 9, 2010)--The Kutztown University women's soccer team tied with Slippery Rock, 1-1 in a tough double overtime Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest Saturday afternoon at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium. (BOXSCORE)
Kutztown is ranked 22nd in the latest National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA)/ HendrickCars.com top 25 poll.
The Golden Bears (8-3-1, 5-3-1 PSAC) knew that this game wouldn't be easy. KU was closely matched with SRU (7-3-2, 5-3-2 PSAC). Both teams battled for two overtime periods but their tremendous efforts resulted a draw.
Both teams scored early.  In the third minute, Slippery Rock's Dana Kiger scored and gave SRU the advantage 1-0. Kiger's goal was assisted by Danielle Turner.
Slippery Rock continued to look for other ways to score, attempting six more shots, but in the 23rd minute, Kutztown's Stephanie Borland got Kutztown even with her fifth goal of the season. Borland's goal was assisted by Shannon Pennock.
Borland is one of KU's top scorers and she leads the team in assists. Borland is ranked 16th in total assists (6.0) and 24th in assists per game (0.6), in the recent NCAA Division II national rankings.
In the second half, both teams continued to apply pressure and searched endlessly for ways to score, but they were unsuccessful. Slippery Rock took five shots in the second half while the Golden Bears took two shots.
At the end of regulation, anxiety weighed on both teams. In the first overtime, Kutztown's top scorers, Carolynne Kahl and Borland tried to strike the decisive blow, but Slippery Rock's defense seized those chances.
SRU also attempted two shots in the first overtime but KU goalie Casey Behrendt didn't allow anything through her territory. Behrendt recorded fives saves.

Emotions ran even higher as the game entered the second overtime. Pennock attempted a shot in the early in the second overtime, but Slippery Rock's Alli Bird came up with a big save.
Kutztown returns to action Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Clarion University at Keystone Field beginning at 3 p.m.
