CALIFORNIA, PA (October 2, 2010) — The Kutztown University women's soccer team went into overtime against California (Pa.), but the Golden Bears fell short, 1-0, at Roadmap Park Complex in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match Saturday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)
KU (7-3 overall, 4-3 PSAC) tried to repeat yesterday's performance in its 3-0 shutout victory against Shippensburg, but Cal didn't make it easy for the Golden Bears.
The Vulcans, ranked seventh in the latest National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA)/HendrickCars.com top poll, had 25 shots. In the 93rd minute, Cal's Bethany Smyda scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Erin Feltz and Darlja Davidson.
From the start of the game, the Vulcan offense challenged the Golden Bears by taking 14 shots in the first half. KU stood the test and answered back and had five shot attempts in the first half, but both teams remained scoreless.
Golden Bear Crystal Zerbe attempted to help KU by taking a shot on goal but Cal's Paula Jackson made the save.
The second half was identical to the first with Cal pressuring KU's defense. The Golden Bears tried to answer back with shot attempts from Shannon Pennock, Kelly Bushe, and
Zerbe.
KU freshman goalie Casey Behrendt had a busy day, recording nine saves.
Although KU fell to Cal, it still has a lot to be proud of. The Golden Bears picked up points on the road and split games with Cal and Shippensburg this weekend. They also proved that they could battle with a nationally-ranked team.
KU returns home on Wednesday to face Lock Haven in a PSAC game at 3 p.m. on Keystone Field.
