KUTZTOWN, PA (January 13, 2010) – The Kutztown University women's basketball team opened its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division schedule by defeating East Stroudsburg 85-52 Wednesday night at Keystone Arena.
Kutztown (10-4, 1-0) controlled the game, both offensively and defensively against East Stroudsburg (2-12, 0-1). Senior center Chauntelle Schroeder (Toronto, Ontario, CANADA/Mother Teresa) (Toronto, Ontario/Mother Teresa Catholic) led KU with a double-double, scoring 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Schroeder shot 4-for-8. Senior forward Vivian Melvin (Chichester, PA/Chichester) (Chichester/Chichester) contributed 15 points, the seventh straight game she has scored in double figures to help Kutztown win its second consecutive contest.
Senior forward Rachel Wisemiller (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) (Hazleton/Hazleton) finished with nine points, a career-high eight assists, six blocked shots and six rebounds. She also moved into second place all time in career 3-pointers. Wisemiller sunk three 3-pointers to move into second place all time in career 3-pointers, slipping past Amanda Zinobile (2000-04).
Kutztown took control of the game from the beginning scoring the first seven points of the game and the first eight points to begin the second half. Junior forward Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) (Pittsburgh/Shaler) 3-pointer started the scoring for Kutztown.
The Golden Bears continued to expand the lead in the first half, scoring 11 points in the first six minutes of play. Schroeder led the team at halftime with 12 points. Melvin scored nine points, contributing to Kutztown's 35-21 halftime lead.
Kutztown's strong defensive efforts on rebounds and turnovers held the Warriors to 21 points in the first half .
Kutztown returns to action Saturday afternoon when it visits Millersville University in a PSAC East contest starting at 1 p.m.
