KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University football team dropped a 31-12 decision to fourth-ranked Bloomsburg University in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener Saturday night at University Field.
In winning its 11th consecutive road contest, Bloomsburg improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC East. Kutztown dropped to 2-2 and 0-1.
Kutztown junior kicker
Matt Dineen (Wilmington, De/Concord) established a school record with his 25th career field goal. Dineen, who was 2-for-2 in field goals against the Huskies, set the school standard on a 38-yard field goal nine seconds into the fourth quarter. The previous mark was 24 set by Matt Scartozzi between 2002-05. Dineen also kicked a 30-yard field goal in the second quarter. Dineen is 25-for-36 during his stellar career.
Kutztown freshman wide receiver
Chris McCormick (West Chester/West Chester East) caught six passes for a career best 67 yards and a touchdown. It was the second consecutive week McCormick caught a touchdown pass. It was an 11-yard catch from freshman quarterback
Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) in the fourth quarter. McCormick also hauled in a career-best 42 yard catch in the third quarter. Through four games, McCormick is averaging 11.2 yards per catch.
Morton was 15-for-22 for 162 yards. In addition to McCormick, freshman
Jake Cahill (Folsom, PA/Ridley), sophomore
Colby Tuell (Columbia, PA/Columbia), sophomore
Zach Snyder (Lititz, PA/Warwick) and freshman Doiminick Massey all had at least one catch that covered 10 or more yards.
Defensively, senior
Jay McKnight (Reading, PA/Conrad Weiser) finished with 14 tackles and junior
Joel Irwin (Coatesville, PA/Bishop Shanahan) added 10 for the Golden Bears. Senior
Craig Croman (Pine Grove, PA/Pine Grove) had Kutztown's lone sack of the game in the second quarter.
Khalief Evans (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) and
David Cressman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) each had six tackles. Kutztown's defense held Bloomsburg to 13 yards in the third quarter. In its last two third quarters, Kutztown has held Slippery Rock and Bloomsburg to minus-3 yards.
Junior
Greg Rotkowski (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) had a helmet-jarring hit on a kickoff return. Evans also had a bone crunching smack-down near the goal line.
The Kutztown defense got an early turnover when senior
Brent Howard (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) recovered a fumble. Junior
Kevin Bolinsky (Ashland, PA/North Schuykill) forced the first quarter fumble with a solid strip. Unfortunately, Kutztown could not take advantage of its early opportunity. A pass to a streaking McCormick, who was wide open in the end zone, on the very next play was overthrown. Had the connection been made, KU would have had an early lead. Kutztown lost five yards on its next two plays.
Bloomsburg took control of the game by scoring two touchdowns in the final 33 seconds of the first half. Bloomsburg quarterback Dan Latorre fired short touchdown passes to Dylan Manni and Chris Tressler to expand a 7-3 edge into a 21-3 halftime bulge. The Huskies became the first team this season to rush for 100 yards against Kutztown as they finished with 143 yards.
Kutztown visits West Chester next weekend in a game beginning at 6:00 p.m. Bloomsburg hosts C.W. Post starting at noon.
