KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University baseball team jumped out to an early lead and held on to win 8-2 over Widener University in a non-conference contest Wednesday at North Campus Field.
Shayne Houck (fr. Barto/Boyertown) led the Golden Bears (22-5), going 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.
Chad Lightcap (sr. Boyertown/Boyertown) and Dom Fantanarosa (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) each went 2-for-3 in the game. Lightcap had a double and an RBI, while Fantanarosa scored a run.
KU sent six pitchers to the mound, all holding Widener (8-7-1) to two runs on six hits and four walks.
Jason Herr (so. Harrisburg/C.D. East), Kevin Morganti (jr. Reading/Muhlenberg), Matt Patteson (fr. Lebanon/Cedar Crest) and Mike Bucklin (jr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) all pitched scoreless innings for the Golden Bears.
Herr started, pitching two hitless innings and striking out two. Morganti pitched two innings, allowing one hit, followed by Jordan Smith (so. New Milford/Blue Ridge), who earned the win with one inning pitched.
Anthony Fegely (so. Exeter/Exeter) pitched two innings, followed by hitless innings by Patteson and Bucklin.
Jared Frey (jr. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) had two RBIs for KU, and Cody Montz (fr. Schuylkill Haven/Schuylkill Haven) scored two runs
Mark Renda (so. Lansdale/North Penn) and Michael Dugan (so. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) each had RBIs.
The Golden Bears will travel to Wilmington (Del.) University for a 1 p.m. non-conference matchup Sunday.
