Kutztown, PA – The Kutztown women's volleyball team closed the Kutztown Challenge by defeating New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) 3-0 to win their fourth-consecutive match.
The Golden Bears (6-1 overall) dominated the first game, racking up 11 kills, for a 25-13 win. Led by Lindsay Confer (Wingate, PA/Bald Eagle) (Wingate/Bald Eagle) and Katie Miller (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown), the Golden Bears built a 12-point lead in a fast-paced first game.
NYIT, members of the East Coast Conference, rebounded in the second game, challenging Kutztown and holding the lead for a majority of the game. KU responded with blocks by Brianna Risch (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) (Coatesville/Coatesville) and Miller to tie the score 24-24. On the next two plays, Risch and Miller finished it with two kills to give Kutztown a 26-24 victory.
Kutztown closed out the match, 25-10, using a service ace by Jamie Celia (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) (Douglassville/Daniel Boone). The Golden Bears' Dana Wright (Warminster, PA/Saint Basil Academy) (Warminster/Saint Basil Academy) tallied 23 assists for a team total of 36. Celia contributed 14 digs, and Wright added another 10.
The women will hit the road for their next five games, visiting Mercyhurst, Edinboro, Gannon, ESU and Lock Haven. They return Monday, September 28, hosting Alvernia College in what counts as a home match for the Golden Bears at Pine Grove Middle School, a neutral site.
