Records continue to fall as Kutztown blanks sixth straight opponent

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. (October 14, 2009) – The Kutztown University women's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to seven and shutout string to six by defeating Shepherd University, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match.

This was KU's ninth shutout this season, tying the program record, which was established in 2005. In addition, the Golden Bears (10-2-2 overall) have not allowed a goal in 590 minutes. Finally, freshman keeper Alyssa Hackelberg (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) broke the KU women's soccer record for most shutouts in a season with nine, which surpassed the previous total of eight set by Mandi Johnson in 2003.

Kutztown, ranked 16th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll and second in the Atlantic Region, scored two goals in the opening 20 minutes to cruise to victory. Freshman Stephanie Barnett (Blandon, PA/Fleetwood) (Blandon/Fleetwood) enjoyed a memorable afternoon by scoring two goals and adding an assist on freshman Julia DiFerdinando (Chadds Ford, PA/Garnet Valley)'s (Chadds Ford/Garnet Valley) scoring tally.

Barnett opened the scoring in the fifth minute when she converted a pass from junior Jen Pyne (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) (Wall Township, NJ/Wall). Barnett found DiFerdinando for the second goal in the 18th minute. Barnett finished her memorable afternoon by scoring the final goal in the 66th minute off of sophomore Emily Froehlich (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge)'s (Perkasie/Pennridge) pass.

Kutztown begins its home stretch of matches with a showdown at Shippensburg Saturday night starting at 7:30 p.m. The Golden Bears' final five matches are all against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponents.
