KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University football team defeated Cheyney University, 35-21, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division football game at University Field Saturday afternoon.
Junior kicker
Matt Dineen (Wilmington, De/Concord) etched his name into the record books for the second time this season by making a KU single-game record five field goals. Dineen also tied his school record for field goals made in a single season with 13. Dineen made field goals of 41, 41, 29, 38 and 28 yards to improve to 13-for-14 on the season. He has made at least one field goal in every game this season.
Dineen made three of his five field goals in the third quarter as Kutztown (3-3 overall, 1-2 PSAC East) stretched its halftime lead from 20-14 to 29-14 entering the fourth quarter. Dineen's accuracy helped Kutztown earn its first home victory of the 2009 season and reach a season-high point total.
"Making five field goals in a game is a nice accomplishment, but it was more important for us to win the game," Dineen said. "I just wanted to do anything I could to help us win. I also have to give credit to my line for blocking well,
Ryan Bailey (Boiling Springs/Boiling Springs) for snapping and
Storm Miller (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) for holding. They did all of the hard work."
In beating Cheyney (0-6, 0-3) for the 16th consecutive time, the Golden Bears allowed 81 yards of offense after intermission. The Kutztown defense did a solid job in the second half to open some distance and pull away.
Kutztown was paced by senior running back
Dontay Wilson (Stamford, CT/Stamford) who gained 70 yards on 17 carries. Wilson has now rushed for 1,952 yards during his sterling career. He needs 48 yards to become the 10th Kutztown players in school history to rush for 2,000 career yards. Junior
Kendell Coleman (Philadelphia, PA/Martin Luther King) finished with 67 yards on 11 carries.
Redshirt freshman
Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington), making his second career start ended the scoring with a 38-yard scoring run late in the fourth quarter that swelled the Golden Bears' advantage to 35-14. Morton was 15-for-24 for 199 yards. He completed passes to six different receivers.
Freshman wide receiver
Chris McCormick (West Chester/West Chester East) caught four passes for 77 yards. McCormick had the highlight of the game when he hurdled a Cheyney defender after making a catch along the Cheyney sideline during a first half drive.
Defensively, the Golden Bears were paced by junior defensive back
Khalief Evans (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) and senior linemen
Craig Croman (Pine Grove, PA/Pine Grove). They had a team-high six tackles each. Junior defensive back
Jay McKnight (Reading, PA/Conrad Weiser) had an interception. Croman, redshirt freshman defensive end
Bryce Martin (Teaneck, NJ/Bergen Catholic) and senior safety Chris McCaffery all recorded sacks for the Golden Bears.
Kutztown held Cheyney to minus -8 yards in the third quarter. It was the second time this season Kutztown held a team to minus yards in the third quarter.
Freshman wide receiver
Jake Cahill (Folsom, PA/Ridley) blocked a punt on Cheyney's opening possession that set up the Golden Bears' first touchdown. The 33-yard drive was capped when sophomore running back
Calvin Spires (Philadelphia, PA/Frankford) scored from 1-yard out to give Kutztown a 7-0 advantage less than five minutes into the game. Dineen, who made a pair of 41-yard field goals in the first half, gave KU a 10-0 edge with a 29 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Cheyney refused to go quietly. The Wolves gained 147 of their 246 total yards in the second quarter as they outscored KU, 14-10. Cheyney scored a pair of touchdowns sandwiched around running back
Josh Mastromatto's (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) first career touchdown-- a 10-yard run with 11:21 remaining in the first half.

His only touchdown pass to Dominic Crowell pulled Cheyney to within, 17-14, with 4:14 remaining in the second quarter. Travis Taltoan caught three passes for 55 yards. The 21 points were a season high for Cheyney.
