KUTZTOWN, PA. – The Kutztown University women's swimming team enjoyed a strong home debut by defeating East Stroudsburg, 149-102, and Misericordia, 166-88, Saturday afternoon at Keystone Pool.
Leading the way for the Golden Bears (3-1 overall, 2-1 PSAC) was senior
Steph Jeppesen (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), sophomore
Jordan Shapiro (Yardville, N.J./Princeton) and junior
Kerry Choplin (Thorofare, N.J./West Deptford). They each won a pair of individual events. Jeppesen and Shapiro were also members of the winning 200-yard medley relay team along with junior
Katie Kelly (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) and junior
Allison Sheely (Enola, Pa./Trinity). The quartet claimed the victory in 1 minute, 52.13 seconds.
Jeppesen won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.22) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.68). Shapiro was victorious in the 100-yard freestyle (55.39) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.38). Meanwhile, Choplin prevailed in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.53) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:21.56).
Other individual winners for Kutztown included senior
Heather Wolkom (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Regional ) and sophomore
Nikki Hinsdale (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin). Wolkom won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:55.25) and Hinsdale was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.59).
Kutztown returns to action next weekend when it travels to Fairbanks, Alaska to meet the University of Alaska-Fairbanks on Friday and Saturday October 30-31, 2009. The Golden Bears' next home meet will be on Saturday Nov. 7 when they host Indiana, Mansfield and Bloomsburg beginning at 1 p.m.
