KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Redshirt freshman
Darrell Scott (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) and the Kutztown University rushing attack turned in season-high performances in a 43-26 setback to East Stroudsburg University on Saturday afternoon in Kutztown's annual homecoming game at University Field.
Â
Scott ran for a career-high 117 yards including a 78-yard touchdown early in the second quarter that tied the game at 7-7 in Saturday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup. Unfortunately for the Golden Bears (1-7, 1-4 PSAC East), the Warriors (5-3, 2-3) went on to score 33 of the game's next 36 points to take control of the game.
Â
The Kutztown rushing attack reeled off a season-high 256 yards with the majority of the yardage spread among three running backs. Notably, none of Kutztown's three running backs had rushes for negative yardage, and all three backs had runs for 20 or more yards.
Â
"I'm very pleased with the way our running game worked for us today," head coach Drew Folmar said. "We did a good job of matching up against the defense and spreading out the field. Our offensive line deserves a lot of credit for the job they did up front."
Â
Along with Scott's nine carries for 117 yards and a score, an impressive 13 yards-per-carry, freshman James Wah had eight carries for 79 yards in his second game of the season. He held a 9.9 yards-per-carry average that was improved by a 23-yard scamper late in the fourth quarter.
Â
Senior
Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) had back-to-back 20-yard runs late in the first half as he finished the game with 42 yards on four carries. The pair of runs set Kutztown up for a season-long, 36-yard field goal by
Andrew Deutsch (Kutztown, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) to bring the Golden Bears' deficit to 13-10 with 1:28 to play in the half. East Stroudsburg's Taylor Groff answered with one of three field goals on the day as time expired to give the Warriors a 16-10 halftime lead.
Â
With his 42 rushing yards, Wortham now has 1,874 career yards, needing 126 total rushing yards in Kutztown's final three games to be the 11th 2,000-yard rusher in school history.
Â
Kutztown had a new face at quarterback. Redshirt sophomore
Josh Luckenbaugh (York, Pa./Dallastown) started in his second career game and gave the team more of a mobile option under center. Along with 17 rushing attempts, he threw for 147 yards on 17-for-31 passing and two touchdowns.
Â
Both of Luckenbaugh's touchdown passes went to freshman wideout
Kellen Williams (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg). The strikes came on consecutive drives in the fourth quarter on passes to the back right corner of the end zone. For the game, Williams had three catches for 46 yards. He has caught touchdown passes in three straight games and in four of Kutztown's last five games.
Â
Defensively, redshirt senior
Alex DiNolfi (Norristown, PA/Norristown) registered a team-high 12 tackles, nine of which were solo tackles from his safety position. It was the second time this season and first since Sept. 21 against Bloomsburg that DiNolfi had double-digit tackles.
Â
Redshirt freshman
Tyler Pratt (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) started alongside DiNolfi at safety for the first time and had a season-high 10 tackles with a pass breakup and quarterback hurry.
Â
On the defensive line, senior
Michael Gallagher (Clarksboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) had a career-high nine tackles including a pair of sacks.
Cody Waltimyer (York, Pa./York Suburban), Sam Dixon-Dougan, and
Eric Condron (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) each pitched in eight tackles.
Â
East Stroudsburg was led by sophomore quarterback Matt Soltes. The 2012 PSAC East Freshman of the Year threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns on 23-for-36 passing. He connected with three different receivers on his touchdown throws and also ran the ball 10 times including a 19-yard run.
Â
Robert Healy ran for 146 yards on 21 carries for the Warriors. Like Kutztown's three backs, all of Healy's carries went for positive yardage.
Â
A 17-0 third quarter scoring advantage for East Stroudsburg played a significant role in Saturday's divisional game. After trailing 40-10 early in the fourth quarter, Kutztown scored 16 of the final 19 points including a safety that was caused by a snap that went over the East Stroudsburg quarterback's head and out of the back of the end zone.
Â
The Golden Bears hit the road for two straight road games beginning on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Millersville University. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
