KU sports ready for busy weekend at home and on the road

KUTZTOWN, PA (Thursday, March 25 2010) – All of the Kutztown University spring sport teams will be in action this weekend.

BASEBALL:
Ranked third in the latest Division II Atlantic Region poll, the Golden Bears (14-5, 3-3) look to extend their three-game win streak in what promises to be a busy weekend.

On Saturday Kutztown will travel to Mansfield for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. On Sunday the Golden Bears will host Mansfield at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader.

The Golden Bears swept East Stroudsburg in their most recent Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East game. James Quigley secured the second game of the day with a two run, two-out home run in the bottom of the seventh for the 6-4 walk off win.

For the season, third baseman Shayne Houck leads the offense with a .484 batting average, 10 doubles and 28 runs batted in (RBI). Quigley has enjoyed a strong start to the season, hitting .448 with four home runs and 23 RBI's.

Mansfield leads the all-time series 56-49; however, the Golden Bears have won the last six meetings. Kutztown has outscored Mansfield, 28-7, during its current six-game winning streak against the Mounties.

MEN'S TENNIS:
Kutztown (3-2) visits Mercyhurst on Friday for a 2:30 p.m. contest. The Golden Bears come off an 8-1 victory at the University of District of Columbia, with four players each recording two wins each.

In the latest contest, Jonathan Goulet and Bobby Zerwick paired up to win the second doubles contest by a score of 8-3. The tandem of Asok Mukherjee and Cameron O'Donnell were 8-0 winners in the third doubles flight and could provide a challenge to Mercyhurst. Kaushik Das and Arpit Sharma continued their dominance in the first doubles spot, recording an 8-4 win. The final Golden Bear win came from Darren Krout at No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Kutztown's last match against Mercyhurst ended in a 5-3 loss at the NCAA East Regional contest on May 4, 2007. The Golden Bears hold a 2-1 edge in the all-time series.

WOMEN'S TENNIS:
Kutztown (5-4, 1-1)  enjoyed a doubleheader sweep over the University of District of Columbia last weekend. The Golden Bears will look to extend their three-game winning streak Friday when they travel to Mercyhurst for a 2:30 p.m. match.

In the opener last weekend the Golden Bears won each match by a score of 9-0, losing only one game in all of the sets played.  Rohini Das and Ridhima Borooah downed their opponents 8-0 in the first doubles, while Sabrina Arnaud and Nicole Devine recorded a shutout at the No. 2 spot.

In the past two games, Das has not dropped a game playing at No. 1 singles. Devine extended her personal winning streak to three-straight, in the No. 2 and 3 singles spots.

SOFTBALL:
The Golden Bears (23-8, 3-1) will host their home opener against East Stroudsburg at 1p.m. in a doubleheader at North Campus Field.

In the latest National Fastpitch Coaches' Association (NFCA) Division II top 25 poll KU moved up three spots to No. 21. The Golden Bears are rolling right now, having won seven straight games following a sweep of conference rival Millersville Tuesday afternoon.

Five of Kutztown's seven victories during its winning streak have been of the one-run variety. Nicole Henningerhas led the Golden Bear offense in its last three games. She has been on a home-run binge, smacking six over that period. Nicole Colinerileads the Golden Bears with a .345 average and Jennifer Stow is second with a .339 average.

Overall, Kutztown has five batters with at least 50 at-bats hitting over .300: Katie Lynch(.337), Maria Schiavo(.307) and Henninger (.307). Pitcher Katlin Arbogast leads the PSAC in strikeouts with 153 and a 14-5 overall record. She also has a .222 earned run average. Monica Glombhas chipped with a 7-3 record and has struck out 39 batters.

Against East Stroudsburg, Kutztown leads the all-time series, 63-21, and has won eight straight games over the Warriors.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD:
The Golden Bears will travel to the Washington & Lee Invitational this weekend for the two-day event beginning on Friday, March 26.

In their season opener at the Coastal Invite hosted by Coastal Carolina, Kutztown enjoyed a strong 3,000-meter run as they had three student-athletes place in the top eight. Kristin Cupido led a triumvirate of Kutztown runners across the finish line as she came in third place (10 minutes, 9.19 seconds). She was followed by Cristina Reimer, who was fourth (10:11.14) and Becca Brandt, who was seventh (10:19.17).

Ashley Pinter's performance highlighted a solid effort for the Golden Bears in their outdoor debut. Pinter tossed the hammer 162 feet, 5 inches. She also finished 12th in the discus (119-07).

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD:
The men's team will also be performing in the two-day Washington & Lee Invitational starting Friday, March 26.

In its opening meet of the season at Coastal Carolina, Justin Germani began the outdoor season for the men by finishing second in the pole vault at the Coastal Carolina Invitational near Myrtle Beach last weekend. The Golden Bears' 4 x 400-meter relay team according to the final results sheet of Joe Tavormina, Kori Meshaw, Kendel Dixon and Shaun Crump was fourth in a time of 3:20.76.

Greg Senatore, Frank Nick and Ryan Reich all finished fifth in their respective events. Senatore tossed the shot put 46 feet, 10 inches. Nick conquered the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9 minutes, 56.47 seconds. Reich finished the 5,000-meter run in 15:32.38.

LACROSSE:
The Golden Bears (1-5, 0-2) will host Edinboro on Keystone Field for a 1p.m. contest. The Golden Bears defeated Erskine College 27-1 last Saturday.

For the season, Lindsey Crits leads the team with 11 goals, followed by Jen Dunne with 10. Goalkeeper Karly Waltman has recorded 35 saves in six games.

This will be the three-year old program's first meeting against Edinboro.


WOMEN'S GOLF:

The team will open their spring season after a five month hiatus at the McDaniel Invitational. In the fall, the Golden Bears ended their season with a postponement of the PSAC Championships that were to be held at the Hershey Country Club.

Chelsea Corbo, averages a team high of 82.3.  Freshman Mindy Glatfelter trails in second with an average of 85.3. The two-day tournament begins on Saturday, March 27.
