Perhaps the best baseball player in Kutztown history was Bill Sassaman, who played center field for the Golden Bears four years. He hit over .400 his final three years and was named to the Pennsylvania Conference East first team. Sassaman, who is from nearby Muhlenberg High in Reading and teaches and coaches in Manheim Central School District, is the school career leader for stolen bases and runs scored. Because of his hard work and excellent play the team’s MVP award is named after him.
