Sammy Spayd (’31) starred in two sports at Kutztown, then Kutztown State Teachers College, from 1927-31.  Spayd was a standout for Kutztown’s track & field team.  He became the first-ever Pennsylvania State Teachers College (PSTC) champion in the broad jump and high jump as a freshman in 1928.  He repeated as high jump champion and placed third in the broad jump the next year.  As a junior, he placed fourth in the high jump at the PSTC meet.  He was also a four-year starter center for the men’s basketball team, serving as captain as a senior.  Spayd graduated from Ontelaunee High School (now Schuylkill Valley), where he was coached by fellow 2001 inductee Raymond Loose.  He graduated from Kutztown with a degree in education in 1931.  He passed away in November 1966.  Last year, Spayd was named one of KU’s Top 30 Athletes of the 20th Century.
