A pioneer in women's intercollegiate athletics at Kutztown State College, Mary H. Hill coached the Golden Bear field hockey team for eight seasons in the 1970s.

Hill took over the Golden Bears field hockey program in its fifth year of existence (1973) and led the team to four-straight winning seasons.   Her teams combined for a record of 32-9-5 from the 1973 through 1976 seasons.  Her 1976 team finished 12-1, which remains the best single-season winning percentage (.923) in team history.   The only loss that year came against defending National Collegiate champion Ursinus.

Hill's overall coaching record of 44-30-11 places her top in program history in career winning percentage (.582).

Hill is responsible for coaching four current members of the Kutztown University Athletics Hall of Fame: Louise Andersen Carl, Barbara Francis, Linda Kauffman and Karen Messner.  Her 1974 team produced six first team players for the second annual Lehigh Valley Associate of Coaches All-Star Tournament.  The 1975 team produced three first team players, and the 1976 team produced an unprecedented seven first team selections.

The Golden Bears finished 6-6 in 1977 for their fifth-straight non-losing season, with four players being named to the Lehigh Valley Collegiate All-Star Team.

A native of Port Washington, N.Y., Hill resigned in 1979 following two rebuilding seasons to accept a full-time high school teaching and coach job.  She coached field hockey, gymnastics, basketball and track at Fleetwood High Area School from 1973 to 2011 and is a member of the school's Athletics Hall of Fame.

Her husband, Lee Hill, is also a member of the KU Athletics Hall of Fame. They have four children – two sons and two daughters – with 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
