After playing center and nose guard at Spring-Ford High, where he was the captain as a senior, he made All-Pennsylvania Conference first team, All-State second team, and Little All-American honorable mention at Kutztown, where he was an offensive and defensive end. He graduated with a degree in education for the visually impaired, then taught and coached at Boonton, N.J., where he was honored by the Morris County Coaches Association as Coach of the Year. He received his master’s degree in rehabilitation of the blind from Western Michigan in 1969. He has been the director of the Western Blind Rehabilitation Center, Palo Alto, Calif., since 1980.
