John Frownfelter collected back-to-back All-America honors in the weight throw in 1999 and 2000 and was a four-time Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) champion in throwing events. He won three conference crowns in the weight throw and doubled up in 1999 by also winning the shot put. Frownfelter, of Blain, Pennsylvania, was part of six Kutztown championship teams, including four straight ECAC Indoor Championships from 1997-2000, and the 1998 and 2000 PSAC Outdoor Championships.

Frownfelter was the national runner-up in the weight throw at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships as a junior in 1999. He repeated as an All-American in 2000, finishing fourth in the event. Frownfelter also competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2000, placing ninth in the hammer throw.

Frownfelter graduated with KU's weight throw record at 63-feet, 7.75-inches, which remains two decades later. He's the only athlete in program history to have exceeded 60 feet. Frownfelter's name still appears sixth on KU's Indoor Top 10 for the shot put (51-feet, 7.5-inches) as well. The former school record-holder in the hammer throw at 185-feet, 2-inches, Frownfelter now ranks second on KU's Outdoor Top 10. He ranks ninth in the discus at 151-feet, 8-inches.

Frownfelter earned Dean's List honors seven times and received PSAC Spring Top 10, CoSIDA Academic All-District and USTFCCCA All-Academic accolades as a senior in 2000.
