John Buzas

John Buzas (’41) was an outstanding offensive lineman for the “Golden Avalanche” teams of 1938-40. A three-year starter, he led the Avalanche to winning campaigns two of his three seasons. Buzas was named captain of the football team his senior year and was a member of the Varsity “K” Club. He also played two years of tennis and one year of basketball for the Avalanche. Buzas earned a bachelor’s degree in social studies and master’s from Temple in education. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Army and participated in four invasions during World War II. He was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his part in the Allied victory. After the war, Buzas began a 30-year teaching career at Darrah School in Philadelphia as a special education teacher. After Darrah, he accepted a position at Ben Franklin High School as a varsity football coach and special education teacher. He moved on to Abington High School in Abington, PA, where he coached varsity football and softball. He finished his career at William Tennant high school in Warminster, PA, where he coached students for the Special Olympics, and started up the women’s track team. Buzas served as a volunteer at University of Pennsylvania Hospice and the Abington Hospital Hospice. He currently resides in Glenside, PA. He is retired, but remains an active volunteer in his community.
