Barrett McFarland (’85) was an All-PSAC sprinter for the KU track and field squad. He placed in the top six at PSAC Championships all four years. As a freshman, he placed fourth at the PSAC Championships in the 220-yard dash (22.4 seconds) and was the team’s highest point scorer for the season with 86 points. The following year he placed sixth at the PSAC meet in the 440 dash (49.6), breaking the school record in the process. He was the anchor of the fourth-place 4x100 relay team. In his junior year (1979), he again placed in two events at the PSAC Championships, finishing fifth and sixth in the 100 and 200 dashes respectively. Mcfarland’s senior year was highlighted by a third place finish in the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Division III Championships. He became Kutztown’s third track and field All-American while breaking the school record in 21.9 seconds. Prior to the nationals, he had three top six finishes at the PSAC Championships, placing second in the 100-meter dash (10.9) and third in the 200-meter dash (21.9). He helped the 4x100-meter relay team to a second place finish and a qualifying position at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships with a time of 41.7 seconds. McFarland received his bachelor’s degree from KU in elementary education. He served in the U.S. Army and is currently a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard. He is currently employed by the Chester Upland School District in Chester, PA, as a coach and as a remedial mathematics instructor.
