Results BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Friday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) men's tennis semifinal came down to the second flight of singles. Kutztown University and Mercyhurst University were tied 4-4 with one match to go, and the Lakers came away with a 5-4 team victory to advance to the PSAC Championship at Bloomsburg University's Burt Reese Tennis Center.
The Golden Bears (14-5) had defeated the Lakers (13-5) 5-4 last week in regular season action, but Mercyhurst came back with its own narrow victory in Friday's postseason matchup.
Kutztown won two of three doubles matches to open the day.
Varun Desai and
Ken Beebe won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles to improve to 17-2 on the year, tying them for sixth in the KU single-season record books. The win marked Desai's 119th career combined victory, moving him into a tie for seventh all-time at KU.
At the final flight of doubles,
Gabriel Nogara Souza and
Indi Reverte earned an 8-6 win to give KU a 2-1 lead.
Mercyhurst took a 4-3 lead by winning three of the next four matches. Kutztown fell at No. 1, 3 and 5 singles, as Reverte kept KU alive with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the sixth flight. It was his team-leading sixth straight win.
Rich Lichtenwalner tied the match at 4-4 with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles, as the match came down to Kutztown's
Matt Maguire and Mercyhurst's Travis Beck at No. 2 singles. The first two sets both went to a tiebreaker, as Beck won the first set 7-3 and Maguire won the second 7-0. Beck pulled out the victory in the final set though with a 6-4 win to down Maguire and the Golden Bears.
Following the PSAC Tournament, the selection for the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament will be announced on Tuesday, April 28 at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time on
www.ncaa.com. KU was ranked sixth in the most recent poll as seven teams qualify for the tournament.
