Late field goal thwarts Golden Bear comeback in season finale

Box Score

KUTZTOWN, PA (November 7, 2009) – Craig Burgess kicked a 41-yard field goal with 0:05 left to lift Indiana University of Pennsylvania to a 34-32 win over Kutztown in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference inter-division season finale at University Field Saturday afternoon.

Burgess' kick spoiled a tremendous come-from behind bid for the Golden Bears, who erased a 31-3 second-quarter deficit to take a 32-31 lead with 8:52 left in the game.

Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) threw for 356 yards and four touchdowns, including a 76-yarder to Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) with 8:52 left in the fourth.  The two-point conversion attempt failed, keeping the score 32-31. IUP drove 67 yards on 16 plays for the game-winning score.

Down 31-3  the Golden Bears came to life late in the second quarter.  Dominick Massey (Abington, PA/Abington) hauled in Morton's first TD pass from 12 yards out with 58 seconds left in the first half.  After IUP's punter fumbled a snap and was assessed a 15-yard penalty for an illegal forward pass, KU took over at the Hawks' 35 with 14 seconds left.  Matt Dineen (Wilmington, De/Concord) hit a 33-yard field goal as the first half clock expired to make it 31-13.

On KU's first play of its second possession of the third quarter, Morton hit Shane Martin (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot) on a 41-yard strike for a TD.  Two possessions later, Morton found Chris McCormick (West Chester/West Chester East) on a 37-yard TD pass with 1:40 left in the third.  Morton's two-point pass was incomplete and KU trailed 31-26.

Mastromatto finished with 105 yards on three catches and Martin had 101 yards and a TD on six grabs.

After forcing an IUP punt, KU's ensuing drive appeared in trouble after consecutive penalties backed the Bears up to its own 24.  Facing 1st-and-25, Morton hit Mastromatto in stride over the middle and the speedy freshman outran the defenders 76 yards to paydirt.  Up one, KU again attempted a two-point conversion, but Morton's pass fell incomplete.  KU led 32-31 with 8:52 remaining.

IUP's ensuing drive was aided by three third-down conversions, including one on a sideline interference penalty called on KU after an incomplete pass.  The Hawks marched to KU's 27 yardline before Harvie Tuck's 3-yard run on 3rd-and-4 set up the winning field goal attempt by Burgess.

IUP was led by its defense, which scored three of the team's four touchdowns.  Cory Lanterman, who had two interceptions, returned a first-quarter pick 62 yards for a score.  Cosie Spigelmeyer and Carl Thornton returned second-quarter fumbles for touchdowns.

Tuck, who had 86 yards on 17 carries, scored IUPs lone offensive TD.  Burgess was 2-for-2 on field goals, including a 40-yarder to open the scoring.

Dineen connected on field goals of 30 and 33 yards for Kutztown.  Dontay Wilson (Stamford, CT/Stamford) ran for 95 yards on 14 carries.

Kutztown's defense was paced by Khalief Evans (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter), who had 14 tackles.  Joel Irwin (Coatesville, PA/Bishop Shanahan) and Chris Medina added 10 stops each.  David Cressman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) and Kevin Bolinsky (Ashland, PA/North Schuykill) had seven hits with a sack.
