Gorski drafted by the New York Mets in the seventh round

KUTZTOWN, Pa. Kutztown University pitcher Darin Gorski (jr. Mount Joy/Donegal) was selected by the New York Mets in the seventh round of the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday.

Gorski, who was the 224th overall pick, was 8-2 with a 2.17 ERA in 2009. He led the Golden Bears in numerous categories, including strikeouts (100), innings pitched (78.2) and batting average against (.208). The left hander had the most strikeouts in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and ranked second in ERA. His strikeout total ranked tied for 10th in all of Division II.

He is the 11th Golden Bear to be selected in the MLB first-year player draft since 1997. Three other Golden Bears are currently playing professional baseball for MLB affiliated clubs – Mike McCardell (Twins), Ron Chiavacci (Tigers) and Philip Rummel (Astros). Ryan Vogelsong (Orix Buffaloes, Japanese League) and Matt Maradeo (Washington Wild Things, Frontier Independent League) are other former KU players still active in professional baseball.

Gorski joins Vogelsong (fifth), Andy Bausher (sixth), McCardell (sixth) and Glenn Woolard (10th) as Golden Bears drafted in the first ten rounds.
